wav to mp3
One of my favorite computer hacks as a musician is turning a wav to MP3. One might ask, “why would you ever need to do that? What is the benefit?” Wav files are the best files. When I say “best,” I mean they are of the highest quality. Wav files are often very large files – usually way over the file size limit for sending in an email or text. They do preserve the quality of a sound recording though.
If you put an audio CD into your CD drive on your computer (assuming you still have one!), and drag a song from there onto your desktop, that’s a WAV file. Most songs are from 50-80 Mb in size, in the WAV format. As mp3s, most songs are around 10 Mb – so that’s why you might want to convert them in the first place.
Because WAV files sound so much better than MP3s, several streaming services such as Tidal are offering premium deals which would give the customer access to high quality wav file versions of all of the songs that are offered on their streaming service. Pretty cool! Granted, MP3s still dominate the online world. iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Google Play, and most other streaming service and music libraries deal with mostly MP3 files.
MP3s are relatively small files, so if you’re needing to quickly send, download, or stream an audio file, MP3 is the way to go. The downside to MP3s is that they are small because they are very compressed, unlike wav files. Therefore, they tend to be much worse in sound quality than larger file formats such as wav or aiff. But they are very convenient, and honestly, they don’t sound THAT bad, depending on the sample rate. I have listened to MP3s for almost my entire life and never felt like I was really missing anything substantial. I have even heard wavs compared to MP3s. There was an audible difference, but if you’re just looking to enjoy a song on your headphones or in your car, most MP3s will be just fine.
A lot of people will look for an online conversion for a wav to MP3 converter, but all you need is a good, ol’ right click! You can also use this same little trick to convert MP3 to wav. You’ll never need another MP3 converter. Thanks and enjoy!
